The North Iowa Corridor Housing Development Corporation recently relocated a donated home from Rock Falls to a site near Newman Catholic School in Mason City. The project preserves an existing house while creating another quality, owner-occupied home for the community.
A Generous Donation
Donated by the Runde family, the 1952 home features three bedrooms, one-and-a-half bathrooms and a four-season sunroom overlooking the backyard.
Rather than demolishing the house, the HDC identified an opportunity to give it a new purpose. The relocation preserves existing housing, reduces waste and expands Mason City’s housing supply.
Moving the Home to Mason City
Spencer Movers of Blue Earth, Minnesota, transported the house to its new location. Moving the home across county roads, city streets and railroad crossings required extensive coordination.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and Mason City Police Department provided traffic control, while county and Mason City Public Works crews prepared the route through grading, tree trimming and sign removal. Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific and Iowa Traction assisted with railroad crossings. Alliant Energy, Mediacom and ITC coordinated aerial lines, and Jared Johanns of Johanns Tree Service and More provided additional tree trimming and disposal.
The Iowa Department of Transportation, Cerro Gordo County and the City of Mason City also coordinated the permits required for the move.
With the relocation complete, work can continue to prepare the house and property for its future owner.
